Adopt-a-Dog Month

Every October is “Adopt-a-Dog Month”, sponsored by the American Humane Association.  Conveniently, it’s also “Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month”, sponsored by the ASPCA.  No matter who is sponsoring the event, the message is clear:  there are thousands of loving dogs waiting for adoption, so please open your home to one the next time you seek a a furry companion.

Adopt-a-Cat Month

The American Humane Association is sponsoring the month of June as “Adopt-a-Cat Month”.  In my mind, every month is Adopt-a-Cat Month, which is why I’ve got so many cats.  You’ll find more information about this event on the AHA’s website.

Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month

April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month, sponsored by the ASPCA.  I think it’s horrible that we need a special month to remind people to not be cruel to animals, but thank you to the ASPCA for spreading the message.

Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is sponsoring the month of November as, “Adopt a Senior Pet” month.  Senior pets are often overlooked at shelters in favour of younger, “cuter” animals, but senior pets have many advantages.  Their personalities are established so you’ll really know the animal you’re adopting, many older pets are trained and used to routines, and senior pets can be more “steady” and calm than a younger dog or cat.  If you’re considering adoption, why not open your home to an animal in its golden years—you won’t regret it.
