Bless you, my peeps
Ever since Scampi was wee, he goes through this motion we call “praying”. I don’t know what else to call it… it looks like he’s blessing the room (if only he had an incense holder like the Catholics, and opposable thumbs so he could carry it). We finally took a video of it, as I want to know if this is a common cat behaviour. I present to you, video of Scampi spreading a message of peace and fish sticks. We’ve trained him to do this on demand, in exchange for pieces of cheese.
I don’t know if it’s a common cat behavior, but I have seen a daschund do it…
It’s incredibly cute, either way.
Posted by prajantr on 07/11 at 05:23 AMScampi is not alone; Madeleine does it, too. She also began as a small kitten without any prompting. Her brother, whom I also adopted when they were 6-8 weeks old, did not. Cool that you have it on cue.
Posted by gottagopractice on 07/11 at 05:36 AMThat is TOO CUTE!! I’ve never seen a cat do that before, but I know Siamese are wicked smart.
I wonder if my cat is too old to teach her tricks....I think she’d do anything for yogurt LOL.
Posted by Angel on 07/11 at 07:48 AMI didn’t mention that our shih-tzu, Phoenix, performs the same behaviour, but in her case it just seems to be begging for food or attention. She’s a rescue, and she was doing it when we adopted her. I find it odd that Scampi does the same thing, considering we’ve had him since he was one day old, he wasn’t taught the behaviour, and neither of his siblings do it.
Posted by Leigh-Ann on 07/11 at 01:04 PMGGP, thanks for the link to the video of Madeleine! Now I really want to know the source of this action… I can’t think of any instinctive purpose it serves. Maybe we need to form a club.
Posted by Leigh-Ann on 07/11 at 01:05 PMWhat a gorgeous cat. I just want to gently poke that dark spot on his tummy. Yoshi doesn’t do this but I’ve seen video of other cats (and dogs) doing it. So cute.
*poke*

Posted by Diana on 07/12 at 04:16 AMThat is the cutest thing I have ever seen. I had a dog (a Shih-Tzu in fact) who would to the motion, but only while lying down on his side. Whenever he did this I would sing, “Saki, row the boat ashore!” because it reminded me of rowing. I like Scampi’s blessing better.
Posted by Helly on 07/12 at 07:19 AMHelly, our dog Cricket drags herself across the floor on her belly, with her legs dangling behind her. We call it “Navy Seal”. With Cricket the Navy Seal and Saki rowing the boat, we could finally beat those bastards in Iraq.
