Blockhead
The cats have two vinyl “cubes” they like to play in. The cubes are sort of like square tents, with holes in the sides to allow cats to run and hide and pounce. The cubes also make fun “rustling” noises, which cats seem to approve of. The other benefit of the cubes is that they’re roomy enough to allow me to hide cat toys inside them at night. Eli the German shepherd just loves to ingest cat toys (it makes her poop festive!), so every evening I go around the house and pick up all the little balls and furry things I can find, and hide them inside a cube.
A couple of weeks ago I guess I hid the toys, but then failed to put the cubes away in a little corner the dog couldn’t reach. I was downstairs and I heard a loud thumping sound from upstairs, and I worried for a minute that Eli had stumbled on the stairs and I went to check on her. Well, she hadn’t stumbled, per se, but she’d stuck her head in a cube in an effort to steal toys, and she became stuck. The noise I heard was her trying to walk down the stairs with the cube on her head, as the cube banged against the metal railing the entire way. I’ll have to be extra-diligent about hiding the trash, as I’m sure she could become the first German shepherd to get her head stuck in a yogurt container.

Here’s a photo of Eli and Dante, taken today while they were outside helping me take pictures of the kestrel. Dante is still losing his winter coat and it’s constantly snowing in the house (no matter how often I brush him):
Hah what silly dogs! That is funny. I remember a previous Rottweiler had to wear one of those big victorian collar thingies after being neutered. He was a mature, very large rescue and was doing some damage to the sutures. When he had the collar on, the poor guy wouldn’t fit through doors. He got real sad and cranky about this.
That is an awesome kestrel photo!Posted by Carina on 06/08 at 10:18 AMha ha! Aw, how cute…in an oops kind of way.
Chelsea and Kaiser haven’t as yet pulled something like this…however, our kitty Darren managed to get his head stuck in one of those cubic tissue boxes. We’re still not sure why he poked his head in there in the first place…
Posted by prajantr on 06/08 at 12:58 PMWith the trash, please also make sure things like potato chip bags or the bags inside the boxes for cereal, etc. are ripped fully open. A number of dogs have gotten in the trash when their people were not around and suffocated after sticking their heads inside the bags and not being able to get them off.
Posted by kabbage on 06/08 at 02:52 PMWhat a goof! You are a much better cat mom than me. I just figured that the dog would eat all the kitty toys, so only got her a fishing pole, that we keep in her room. This means the kitty ends up playing with the dog toys. Well, and all the scraps of stuff that end up on the floor, of course.
Posted by Diana on 06/08 at 04:53 PMYour pups are beautiful! Oreo (my doggie) is in love. :)
Posted by Kestrel on 06/09 at 01:55 AMCarina, the Anatolian wore an e-collar for about an hour a couple of years ago. It was supposed to keep him from chewing on a wound on his tail, but it seemed to cause him to lose his balance, and to forget how to eat and drink. Worst of all, the collar was just slightly too wide to fit through the doggy door, and he kept getting stuck. An hour was all we could stand—we took the collar off and have refused them ever since.
Prajantr, I haven’t had any cats in my tissue boxes yet, but I’ll keep an eye out for it. I’ve had to start pushing the tissues down inside the boxes, as the cats enjoy pulling them out. Bastards.
Kabbage, I was kidding about the yogurt container, as our dogs don’t have any access to the trash. It’s in a heavy metal container with a lid and they’ve never shown any interest in it. However, point well taken :)
Diana, cats are like children. If you buy them an expensive toy, they only want to play in the paper bag you bring toy home in. Trust me. Give your cat a paper bag, a shoelace, and a plastic cap off a milk container and she’ll be in heaven.
And finally, Kestrel—in the interests of full disclosure, I have to tell you that the German shepherd in the photo is female. I don’t like outing other people’s dogs, but something had to be said ;)
Posted by Leigh-Ann on 06/10 at 05:54 AMHaha, funny furkids! Thanks for visiting my blog.
I’m glad Eli did okay as a temporary blockhead and no harm done.
Dante is so cute, thanks for featuring him (you should more often, heehee!) - Yes that ASD hair can be pretty pervasive as it sheds out.
Posted by Semavi Lady on 06/10 at 06:19 AMWhat beautiful dogs!
Posted by Nancy on 06/10 at 11:18 AME-collars are horrid for the dog….in Dutch’s case, we had to do something because he was trying to get the stitches out and licking the incision raw. There’s another kind though, like a big soft donut thing that goes around the animal’s neck. So they have peripheral vision & can fit through doors, but can’t quite turn their heads enough to get at sutures, at least I guess it would work for something on the south end of the dog. :)
Posted by Carina on 06/11 at 09:19 AMOK.. you had me laughing out loud here.. too funny. Poor Eli.. how embarrassing!
Posted by Simply Coll on 06/13 at 02:51 AMDante doesn’t even need e-collars, as he’s not one to fuss with his wounds. The first one he got was in assumption that he’d need them, but since then we’ve been able to avoid them. I’ve seen the soft donut ones, though—they look a bit like clown collars!
Semavi Lady, this year has been the absolute worst for Dante’s shedding. I brush and brush and it’s still rolling around the floor every morning, with no end in sight. I guess we had a chilly winter or something and I didn’t notice, but he really built up a heavy coat this year. I love your Anatolian photos, btw, and I’ll try to post more of Dante in the future.
Coll, the most embarrassing part of this escapade for Eli was that she wasn’t actually “stuck”, because the hole was much larger than her head. She just thought she was stuck. If she’d just sat down and pulled her head back, it would have slipped right out, but oh no, she had to run around the house in a panic.
