Cat butt

image

Am I the only person in the world who has to wipe their cat’s butt on a regular basis?  I don’t read about this problem in books, I’ve never heard of a support group for it, thus, I have to assume I’m the only person on the face of the earth with a cat with a perpetually dirty butt.  When I go through the checkout stand with the jumbo pack of “baby wipes” and the cashier asks, “How’s your baby?” I get to answer, “furry and with a strong affection for turkey giblets, thanks for asking”.  Derek has been such a perfect cat that I guess it’s only natural he have at least one personality or behavioural flaw, but I never figured it would center on his butt.  He gets stuff stuck to it, he doesn’t clean it, and then I have to chase him around with a soapy paper towel and scrub him clean.  I hate to admit it but I think he might like the scrubbing part... perhaps he’s a cat with a creepy fetish and not just poor personal hygiene.  Ewww.

And speaking of cats with bad habits, this is just my favourite website link of all time: “Independent Woman”, played by kittens.

  1. It’s not just you - I have to wipe Satchel everytime he poos.  His legs too.  I hope yours is just dirt and not poopie.  I think it’s because his mommy didn’t teach him about cleanliness.

  2. It’s bit of poop I have to wipe from Derek’s butt—not lots of it, but enough that when he jumps on my lap I go, “Hmmm, what’s that awful smell?”

  3. You are certainly not the only one in this nasty situation.  In fact, I have spent the last half hour looking for similar stories.  Due to an obesity problem, my cat is unable to clean her own butt-so, like you, I am forced to scrub her behind on a daily basis.  I am so grossed out.

  4. Reiko, I’m VERY late in replying to this, but I was able to remedy the problem with my cat by just having him lose weight.  In his case, he didn’t do well on kibble (the carbs, like corn and rice, made him fat), and even low-cal kibble didn’t work.  I switched him to wet food only, fed him one-third of a 5.5 oz can, twice per day (two-thirds of a can per day, total), and he’s really slimmed down.  It was my vet who suggested not feeding more than two-thirds of a can per day, so while I worried I was underfeeding, I guess the vet knew better.  My cat took the weight off quickly but safely, and now he’s tidy from head to butt!  His fur is in better shape, too.

I think most of us are guilty of overfeeding, and the dietary guidelines on the pet food packaging encourage overfeeding.  From what my vet told me, an average, middle-aged, sedentary cat only needs a bit more than ONE of those itty-bitty 3.5 oz. cans of food per day.  Just one.  Of course it would be different if your cat is particularly large to begin with, but my cats are all around 10 lbs.

  5. My cat also has a serious dingleberry problem.  My husband scrubbed his dirty butt again today and it is now official, our cat Furio is overweight. He is now too fat to clean his own behind.

  6. My cat has the same problem.  Although he is constantly cleaning and licking himself, perhaps he just can’t quite reach that little bit at the end, because he is very large and overweight—15.5 pounds.  We have 2 cats, and the other one is just fine, and they eat the same food.

Perhaps I will try switching from the dry kibble to the wet canned food, and see if that makes any difference.  Hopefully he can drop some weight, and maybe the wet food will produce poop that isn’t so “sticky”.

I hate having to wipe his butt.  He doesn’t sit still for it, and I can never get all of it off.  I am thoroughly disgusted, and also embarrassed when other people come over and see it.  He always walks with his tail straight up in the air like the mast of a ship, and he’s tan coloured with pale skin, so every little bit of left-over on his butt shows.  I always thought that cats were so clean, but we’ve had to cover all our furniture with blankets because I don’t want the poopy butt touching anything.
