Clean bill of health
Missy Mae went to the vet today and got a (mostly) clean bill of health! No FeLV or FIV infection, and because of this, the vet didn’t think it was necessary to do a fecal test. He said it’s rare for cats in Las Vegas to have parasite infections because of the dryness, and that cats which have parasites are usually immune-suppressed. If we notice she has diarrhea then we can do the testing, but otherwise I was happy to save $26. Her crumpled-over ear is scar tissue from a past infection but is otherwise fine, and her only major problem is that she badly needs to have her teeth cleaned. We can’t afford that now, but perhaps at the end of the month we’ll be able to take both her and Frank in for some work (Frank’s teeth are pretty terrible, too). The vet guessed her age at about 7 or 8, and even though he didn’t see a spay scar, he said the fact she hadn’t produced any kittens over the past couple of years was pretty good proof that she was spayed.
Despite being terrified, Missy Mae was very well-behaved today. She let me hold her in my arms while we waited to see the vet, and she didn’t struggle, hiss, or try to bite or scratch during her exam. The tech said that the cat did try to run when a loud noise scared her while she was having blood drawn in the back, but otherwise she was very good. The tech gave her a little kiss on the head :) When I brought her home I wanted to change the towel in her crate, so I gently pulled her out of the crate, put in a new towel, and then I placed her in front of me on the floor while I brushed her. I wasn’t sure if she’d like brushing or not, but she started purring quite loudly, and seemed to enjoy it. It wasn’t enjoyable enough to entice her to stay out of her crate, though, because as soon as I took my hands away from her, she scurried back into the crate again. Oh well, it’s a good start.
Susan at Wildrun is going to post a photo of a cage setup she recommends to help Missy Mae adapt to being part of a family (and not isolated downstairs), so I look forward to seeing that and giving it a try.
My front porch feeding station (doghouse) continues to have regular visitors, but I rarely make eye contact with them. One of them seems to be an unneutered male, as I was left a large dose of “pee mail” this morning. It was sprayed all over the front of the doghouse. It was easy enough to clean up, but annoying to know there are more boys with balls wandering the streets.

I’m sure the parents of teenage girls would agree with you.
