Day 21

It was the kittens’ three-week birthday on Wednesday, and Flippy snapped a couple of photos of them partying and tearing up the joint from their new Rubbermaid storage container:

We bought the storage box at Target, and it’s large enough that I can put a bed for them at one end, and a litterbox at the other, with plenty of room in-between.  All that roominess made them a bit nutty, and that’s kept up today as they zoom from one end of the box to the other, running over everything in their path, even if it’s a dish full of food.  The largest kitten, Tie, is already using the litterbox to pee, and I think Scampi has attempted to use it as well.  It’s not really a good design, though - I just filled a small plastic storage box lid with litter - so I need to find something a bit deeper but still accessible so the litter won’t get scattered everywhere.  So far they’re totally opposed to the concept of lapping food from a dish, but will merrily stomp through the dish and cover themselves in formula.

Bing went to the vet today, bad timing on our part as they had to “squeeze us in”, it took 90 minutes of waiting, and all they did was send her home with a vial for me to collect a fecal sample.  I think she enjoyed all the attention, though, and by the time we arrived home she was sleeping soundly.  We made a quick stop at the grocery store on the way home to look for the chicken or turkey babyfood that the vet suggested we try to get the kittens to eat, but the grocery store had nothing plain.  The best I could find was turkey with rice.  I’m to start the kittens on solid food to see if it helps firm up their loose stools.  Bing was specifically taken in because her butt is red and irritated, and she came home with some medicated cream.  I still can’t see anything that looks like worms or eggs in the microscopic fecal samples I’ve checked, so I guess it could be coccidia.  I hope not, though… I hope it’s just the liquid KMR at work, and that everything will soon firm up.

  1. They are so adorable.  I love to hear how they are all doing.  Good luck with the feedings… hope things start to harden up alittle :-)
