Death of a bookstore
The store A Clean Well-Lighted Place for Books, a legend to avid readers, started liquidating their stock yesterday and will soon be shutting their doors. I feel badly that such a famous place can’t afford to stay afloat, and I hate to see the loss of any bookstore, especially an independent one. It sure reflects on how society is changing: people just aren’t reading anymore. A couple of elections ago, there was a bond issue on the local ballot to build a library in our area of town and it was overturned by voters who didn’t think a library had any value. Flippy and I don’t even have retail booksellers near us, so unless we shop online, we have to drive a fair distance to a Borders or Barnes & Noble. We can practically reach out our front door and touch any number of game consoles and TVs and DVD players for sale, yet it’s almost impossible to find a book. Oh wait, there’s an independent Mormon bookstore just a couple of miles from us, but I’m pretty sure they don’t have the books I’m interested in buying. The day I start reading the “Left Behind” series is the day I’m stranded on a desert island with only one book.
This entry is to serve as a bit of a reminder for me to start writing my book reviews in my blog again. I’ve read about three dozen books since I wrote my last review here, and I really need to get caught up. There are some great books I want to write about, and of course, more I want to buy. If necessary, I’ll try to single-handedly ensure that the publishing industry stays afloat.
The thought that a library would not be a place of value is shocking to me. My goodness this is very sad.
