Dogs killed in China

China has slaughtered 50000 dogs in an effort to prevent an outbreak of rabies.  Apparently a mass vaccination program would have been too difficult.  The story is just… stunning… I barely have words for it.  Be forewarned that one photo is front and center in the story, so you won’t be able to avoid seeing it:  Dogs killed in China.  It makes me realize that while I often have complaints against the US and Canadian governments, and think they make mistakes, there’s just no way they’d ever try to pull a stunt like the Chinese did.

  1. I swear I wasn’t copying you this time either! I read the story yesterday and posted that today.
I’ve tried to avoid buying Chinese-made products for a few years. Not that it will do any good, since they’re becoming an economic juggernaut.
I have no words for it either, but dogs have been tortured and killed in China for centuries so this is nothing new.
(Funny, my verification word is “economic.")

  2. It is difficult to comprehend the logic, or its lack in a lot of things when it comes to cultural reactions. I wrote a treatise of sorts on my blog about the Turkish dog situation a while back and the politics behind it all is not pretty of course and I didn’t even get into that part.

Sometimes it is the officials in charge, whose vision and personal “issues” (read ignorance, idiocy or hate driven) that create these problems. Like the BSL issues in North America and Europe—Germany.

My verification word is “corner”, and I’m using Firefox—an earlier comment today didn’t work, so this is a another try. I use IE too but Firefox primarily.

  3. What bothered me most about the story was that pet dogs were taken from their owners and killed.  I can’t even begin to imagine the horror of that, to be walking our little shih-tzu down the street and to have three guys come up and beat her to death.  It just boggles me that any human being thinks that’s “okay”.  If it had been a story about strays being rounded up, I wouldn’t have been quite as shocked by it, but to have pets taken away (even pets which might have had rabies vaccinations), was the epitome of awful.  With China such a powerful and ever-influential country, it’s certainly a concern that their reaction to one possible problem was an immediate massacre.

  4. I’m horrified. There’s no reason for that. I also haven’t the heart to click on the link today. Maybe later. Instead, I’ll just go hug Molly.

  5. It’s horrific not only that they were taking people’s pets, but that they BEAT them to death. That is a completely barbaric and uneccesary way to kill any animal - pet or stray.

  6. At least we’d probably put on free or subsidized rabies clinics.  Are these shots really good for 2 years as my vet said?  Thought that was nice of her not to push for every year if they really didn’t need it, although she easily could have.

  7. Ruth, our dogs only have their rabies shots every three years.  I think studies show they can be effective for up to seven years for some dogs.

  8. After reading this http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14905485/

the dichotomies of technology in handling these different problems just make me angry again.

  10. We saw that story in the paper a couple of days ago and were amazed that doctors would even agree to “undo” the surgery at all.  It’s just crazy!
