Good stuff, bad stuff

First, the good stuff—my Cortland apples arrived today from Vermont.  Sadly, a week of riding around in a hot UPS truck has left them without the “just-off-the-tree” crispiness and snap that they probably had when they were picked, but still, they taste pretty darned good.  And the smell of the apples helps to cover up the smell of the brussel sprouts I sauteed for dinner.  The smallest order I could get was 30 apples, so it will be “apple everything” for the next couple of weeks.  Apple scones?  It could happen.

Another good thing is that the artist known as Wing has released her new mini-CD, “Wing sings AC/DC”.  I first found out about Wing when she was featured in an episode of “South Park”, and I’ve been a fan ever since.  The best part of all is that I ordered a copy of the mini-CD, and got an email confirmation from Wing herself!  How exciting!  Go to Wing’s site and listen to some sample clips and you’ll be hooked, too.

Now for the bad news.  Eli is eating poop again.  I think she eats it when she’s stressed, but I don’t know what she’s stressed about.  Maybe she’s in pain, because I know I gobble down food when I’m in pain (notice that I eat FOOD, not POOP).  I’ll try a couple of doggie aspirin and see if it settles her down.  Other than eating poop she seems great.  Dante, on the other hand, has a lump growing on his ear flap.  It’s not a hematoma-type lump, but a small, firm “pencil eraser-sized” lump on the inside of the ear flap.  At a glance, you’d think it was a blister, but it’s solid.  It’s come up pretty quickly, but we’ll have to get him in to be seen next week.  Dante in the car, such fun!

And in one last tidbit of bad news before I go to bed, someone is shooting dogs in New Orleans again.  There was a story about it, and video footage, on CNN this evening.  When hurricane Katrina first hit, many people were evacuated to a school and told they could take their pets.  When the levees broke, they were forced to evacuate the school, and were not allowed to take their pets with them.  The pets were left behind with ample food and water, and the owners left notes written on the walls listing the dogs’ names, the owners’ addresses, etc.  Shortly after the humans evacuated, someone using tactical bullets (i.e. those issued by the police or military), went through the school and shot all the dogs and killed them.  The discovery was made today by rescuers who visited the school, and the story and video were shown on Anderson Cooper’s segment on CNN.  At the end of the segment, he mentioned that another location full of dogs who’d be shot had also been found, and that he’d seen photos of the second location.  It’s a really gruesome and sad story, and it took place in St. Bernard Parish, home of the infamous Sgt. Mike Minton.  I’m not pointing fingers, I’m just pointing out the coincidence.  Sorry I don’t have a link to a news story about this—check CNN’s website tomorrow (Friday morning) and they might have something up by then.  Also, you can read more about the story on Eric’s Dog Blog.
