Harry’s arriving today…

...no contact with the outside world until I’m done reading!

I’m still not done (it’s been a busy weekend), but here’s a photo of the book’s great Amazon.com packaging.  I really appreciate the effort they took into making the delivery such a special event:

  1. I’ll be interested to hear what you think when you’re done. I had a marathon reading session this weekend to finish, and am dying to discuss with someone! smile

  2. I’m looking forward to your thoughts, too. I’ve kept my Amazon box, which is odd for me. I’m not a keepsake saver.

  3. I’ve been having a really bad “fibro-flare” (actually, a chronic fatigue flare), and I’ve been sleeping 12-20 hours a day for the past few days.  It’s crappy because I’ve been in bed, I just can’t keep my eyes open to read, much less hold a book as hefty as Harry Potter!  I truly hope I’ll be finished soon, because I know information which constitutes “spoilers” will soon be impossible to avoid.  I really have enjoyed the parts I’ve read so far… the first three chapters smile

  4. I’m finally finished (and can barely move my hands and wrists as a result, but no pain, no gain wink).  I really enjoyed the book a lot, although all the action was a tad exhausting!  I also felt that the author really challenged my old brain by pulling in a lot of bits of trivia and loose ends from previous books.  Perhaps most impressive was that she seemed to incorporate every single character ever introduced in the entire Harry Potter series, even if they just appeared in one brief scene.

I missed hearing more from the Hogwarts folks.  Harry, Ron, and Hermione are the focus of the stories, but I don’t enjoy them quite as much when it’s just the three of them alone.  I don’t want to spoil anything important here, but I will say that I found the deaths confusing.  I thought Rowling had announced that there would be two deaths in this book, but there were at least half a dozen that I counted, not to mention another dozen or so deaths of characters with familiar names, so the body count was really high.  I sort of thought it was too high—there were a couple of losses which didn’t seem to further the plot.

I’m sure there are entire websites devoted to picking apart the book page by page, but the only “plot flaw” that really bugged me was the lack of explanation for how the sword of Gryffindor could appear in the Sorting Hat after it had been returned to the goblins.  I’m easy to please.

Finally, I’d been wondering how Rowling could know this was going to be the last book, and how she’d be able to resist revisiting the remaining characters in the future.  When I read the title of the final chapter/epilogue, I almost laughed out loud… I guess she worried about the same thing!
