Homemade dog biscuits
Everytime we drop $10 or $20 at the “dog bakery”, I realize that I should just be baking treats for the dogs myself. I’m quite capable of cooking practically anything, and I figure the dogs probably aren’t too fussy about the appearance of the final product, so there’s zero pressure to produce a masterpiece. A while ago I stumbled across the Two Dog Press website, and as it featured a few recipes for dog treats, I bookmarked it for future reference. I even printed out a couple of recipes and took a shopping list to the grocery store, but many of the non-allergenic ingredients (like rye flour) were tough to find. Still, I managed to pull together all the supplies to make Peanut Butter n’ Honey Oat Crunchies, and today was my first foray into the homemade dog treat arena.
The recipe looks a bit complicated, but they were really quite easy to make once I’d cleared away enough countertop so I could “knead”. I didn’t feel like hunting through cabinets for my rolling pin, so I improvised and squished the dough down with my hands, and then with the bottom of a plate to make it evenly flat. I also didn’t have a cookie cutter, so I just cut the dough into strips and then into one inch squares. The dough does make quite a few cookies, so I could have benefited from being able to fit two cookie sheets into the oven at one time, but I only have two odd-sized cookie sheets so that didn’t work. Can you tell I don’t do much baking? I do lots of cooking, but baking, not so much. In any case, the treats turned out fine, and I think they smelled good because Dante kept poking his nose at the counter the entire time I was working. When finished, even the finicky dogs ate them, so I think that’s a seal of approval. They smelled so good that I ate one, too, and I made Flippy eat one as well, although I neglected to tell her they contained chicken broth in case that tainted her opinion. We both pronounced them tasty, flaky, and a bit bland—they taste like flour and peanut butter, which is basically what they are. I also want to try making the Peanut Butter Bones, although I’m going to have to substitute for the rye flour or order some online.
In conclusion, if you have even marginal kitchen skills, try to bake your dogs some homemade cookies. It’s easy, and apparently, they taste pretty good. If Cricket will eat them, they must taste okay.
Chicken broth?! Hrumph. Just for that, I’m going to have to have one of your mom’s shortbread cookies. To wipe away the spookiness of chicken broth in a cookie.
