I hate the telephone, now meet my new cellphone
I am one of a small but ironically vocal group of people who hate the telephone. I’m not intimidated by it, and I’m not nervous about making calls or talking to strangers. I hate the phone because it’s inconvenient. You have to make sure you call at a good time (most people don’t appreciate a call at 3am), you have to actually take time to talk on the phone as it can be hard to multitask without getting a stiff neck, and the phone leads to confusion. When people send dinner plans to us via email, we know the day and time, and can read and re-read the information as often as necessary. If someone tells us plans over the phone, we’ve got to find a pen and paper, we’ve got to make sure to keep track of the paper after we’ve written on it (i.e. we can’t let Scampi eat it), and there’s always a chance that someone on either end of the phone will develop temporary dyslexia and give out, or write down, incorrect information. At least if someone does that while sending an email, all parties know who is to blame
I think email is convenient, it’s time-saving, and it’s lovely and organized. I love, love, love email. If and when Flippy and I can get married, I want to do it by email.
So, meet my new cellphone, the T-Mobile MDA:
Flippy and I had to get a new cellphone for work, so we chose this model. Its disadvantage is that it features a working telephone. Its advantage is that it comes with wireless email and Internet, and runs on Windows Mobile so I can play cool games in pretty colours! The unit slides out to reveal a full qwerty keyboard (which is pretty easy to type on), and it’s also got a nice camera and takes wireless video. If it only didn’t come with the telephone feature, this would be my favourite cell phone ever!
Hahahaha! You wrote it! I’ve been waiting. I likey! Especially the playing cool games part. Pity it’s a phone.
I love the thought of a wedding by e-mail. I’ll keep an eye out for an invitation should this country ever get its head out of its ass. Of course in my eyes, and the eyes of all who matter, you two have been married for years.
Posted by Diana on 11/08 at 08:05 AMI’m with you! The telephone interrupts whatever you are doing, whereas email can wait until you’re ready. When I was pregnant, I chose a doctor by which one answered their phone 1 minute after 5 because I couldn’t call from work and that was the fastest I ever got home to call (Ha! A cell phone would have helped… 11 years ago!). My hubby and I exchange important text messages like, “Got milk?” “No” “Will get” “Bread too” “Ok”.
BTW, when I talk to my mom in person or on the phone, we interrupt each other and can’t change what we’ve said. Email works out MUCH better for us! I can safely say I get along better with my parents by email!
As for marriage, I’m VERY disappointed in WI today. WTF is the matter with people?
Posted by Victor Tabbycat's Mom on 11/08 at 08:15 AMOhhh....I haven’t had a land line in several years. I *heart* my cell phone! I even like that I can make & receive phone calls with it.
My business gets run from wherever I happen to be and I would be bereft without it.
Dang woman youse2 have been busy, posting daily, job interviewing, starting a business and taking care of kittens…
If you got married via email, would that be a first in the US? That would be cool. Weird, but cool!Posted by Carina on 11/08 at 01:55 PMMaybe we’ll get married by blog. We can each post our vows on our individual blogs, then comment “I do” in each other’s comments.
Posted by Flippy on 11/08 at 02:45 PMMy self-important politician boss had a cellphone back in 1993. It was of course one of the very first ones, and the thing was the size of a breadbox. He loved to carry it around with him so he could do his very important politician work, however. I’m glad that status symbols are now so much smaller and nicer to use.
Thank you for the nice marriage thought, Diana… it was funny though, because I didn’t even think of my “if we can ever get married” comment as being political commentary. I just say it in the way I’d say, “the ice cubes are cold today” - it is what it is.
Carina, I’m not too happy about all our “busy” stuff this month. I have no time to watch TV, and I barely have time to read other blogs, so I’m really behind. The kittens will get to go to new homes soon, so that will certainly free up a chunk of time (even thought I’ll miss them).

I like email, but I like the connection of talking on the phone. Email can be so flat sometimes… Harder to interpret what a person is really ‘feeling’… I know, I know… I am too fucking touchy feely…
