It’s mah birthday

If the kittens allow it and time permits, January 5th will be my birthday.  I’ll be turning 40, but that’s okay because Flippy did it first and survived, and because I’m kept so busy that I won’t have time to worry or mope about it.  Besides, 50 is the new 30, according to this article, so I’ve got plenty of time before I start to disintegrate.  The one thing that bothers me about “40” is that I really feel like my 30’s were lost to illness, so I hope that I’ll be able to turn the corner in that department and finally feel better again.  Here’s to new beginnings!  Oh, and here’s to John Eddie as well, who really makes this day bearable with his song, Forty.  The link is just a snippet, and it has “offensive lyrics”, but go ahead, be daring!

I was quite honoured to be meme’d by VetMommy, but the subject, “5 Weird Things About Me” is a toughie.  How am I supposed to stop at just 5?!  I’ll see what I can come up with, although I guess “weird” is in the eye of the beholder:

  • I’m double-jointed, which is sort of odd for a person with no particular degree of physical fitness.  I can recall a middle-school gym teacher saying something snotty like, “You were the last person I thought would be able to that,”, when I proved to be easily the most flexible person in my class and I could casually touch my forehead to my knee.  Sadly, that feat isn’t something I can still do, but I can make my knuckles, knees, and elbows fold slightly backwards to a degree which creeps Flippy out, so that’s fun.
  • I have an endless capacity for rich things, like chocolate eclairs or dark chocolate mousse.  On the other hand, if I take a sip of Flippy’s tea with sugar in it, it makes me want to barf.  I like my tea clear and my coffee with cream, and absolutely no sugar should touch either.
  • I am absolutely passionate about the smell of menthol, as in Mentholatum.  When I was a teenager, my mother didn’t like us using methol-scented Kleenex, as she feared they were addictive.  Well, maybe she was right, as I’m managed to avoid cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs, but my nightstand still features a jar of… Metholatum!  And Vicks, too, but I think the Vicks smells weird, so I don’t use it (has it been reformulated or something?!  It’s just not right anymore).  I’ve got a breathing problem which crops up when I’m anxious, and the one thing that can help me ward off a panic attack is the smell of menthol.  I find it very calming and soothing, and also enjoy using peppermint oil when I’m stressed.
  • When I tweeze my eyebrows, I sneeze.
  • I try to communicate telepathically with the cats.  I don’t bother trying with the dogs, as I can just speak in English to them and they act like they’re listening.  With the cats, though, I’ll often try to mentally “reach out” to one of the cats if I want some company, and by golly, it often seems to work.  Soon I’ll trick them into divulging the secret lottery numbers.

I guess I’ll pass this meme along to Flippy (of course), as well as Colleen, Expat, Susan, and Celine.  I don’t know Colleen or Susan very well, but hope they’ll accept this meme and not look at it distainfully, like a chain letter.  This task requires no stamps, and you won’t have bad luck if you choose not to do it.  At least, I don’t think you’ll have bad luck…

  3. Woot!  Happy Birthday!  :cheese:

Are you able to get a sitter for the kittens tonight so that you can go out and celebrate?  Indeed, 50 is the new 30 so really you are just turning a new and much wiser 20.  :)

I try to communicate telepathically with the Dude in order to get him to do my bidding.  So far, it is not working out that well for me.  LOL

  6. Happy Birthday!  Excellent weirdo list!  I’ll have to try that telepathic communication with the cats at work…. “You will let me draw blood from your neck and you will not scratch or bite me….”

  7. Hey, happy birthday!  I’m a day late, but hopefully it still counts.  Sounds like you had a really good one, and I’m glad to hear it.  Your list was great.  One niece and one nephew are both freakishly double-jointed.  They could be working in a sideshow.  Have you ever considered it??  We have in common the thing about rich foods but unsweetened coffee and tea, and menthol.  When I was a kid I would sleep with a cotton ball soaked in camphophenique.

  8. I said it in my birthday post but I’ll say it again… I do appreciate all the good wishes.  And Nancy, sure, a belated birthday greeting still counts—it just means I get to eat your portion of cake to punish you.

  9. Hi, I just found this blog as I was doing research on Mentholatum. I can’t believe you put into print exactly what I was thinking about it and Vick’s.  (I too feel they changed the formula) I have recently become “addicted” to Mentholatum.  I keep one in my purse and one on my nightstand.  I have a very keen sense of smell and am a caregiver for the elderly, so I use it to ward off any bad smells.  Thank you for validating my thoughts and feelings about this wonderful product.  Do you think it is physically addicting?  Would love to have a reply.  Thanks, Lola
