Just another day in Las Vegas
People often ask me what it’s like to live in Las Vegas. I don’t think people in other, more “normal” cities get asked this question—I think there’s a perception by many people that Las Vegas is only the Las Vegas Strip, and that everyone who lives here must work in a casino. I once read someone complain that Las Vegas was hot because “there are no trees”. Can you imagine an entire city devoid of trees? Trust me, we have trees… there are even trees growing inside some casinos, so I’m not sure why that overheated person had never noticed them. My response to people who ask about Vegas is that it’s really just like any other major city. Yes, it’s a bit odd until you get used to seeing slot machines in the grocery store, and I still sometimes feel a bit of awe when I’m in my backyard at night and see the light from the Luxor illuminating the sky, but otherwise, life here is very normal. I think we have a greater variety of gourmet food choices and entertainment opportunities than some other places, but once you’re away from the Strip, Vegas is just roads and traffic and schools and shopping malls and subdivisions.
That being said, there are occasionally reminders of how life here is different in subtle ways. When we go to the veterinary opthalmologist, the waiting room has the usual client photos, but these clients are dogs with owners like Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gourmet, or Robert Goulet. When I go to my internist, her office is full of autographed photos of the Temptations (I’m not sure if that’s a Vegas thing, or just some odd fetish she’d have in any city). When I went with Flippy to the chiropractor, the attractive woman in the waiting room next to me was a trapeze artist from Cirque du Soleil who’d hurt her back at work. Apparently you can even run into Pink and boyfriend Carey Hart at the grocery store, although that’s never happened to us.
The reason I was thinking of these things was because last night we went to a hockey game, but it was a uniquely Las Vegas midnight hockey game. The puck dropped at 12:05 am, entertainment was provided by the “little people” band, Mini Kiss, and the event was sponsored by a local strip club. That’s a club with strippers, not necessarily a club on the Strip. The strip club had women in the arena handing out free drink coupons, and one of them stopped Flippy and I and told us to visit the club and to eat at the restaurant, which, she assured us, was fabulous. I didn’t see other women being stopped—apparently it’s time to stop looking so much like a lesbian :p The hockey game was great, went into overtime and a shootout, and by the time we fell into bed this morning it was 5am. I wouldn’t want to do that every week, but once a year, it’s fun to be reminded that we live in “Sin City”, where we can share vets with celebrities and see exotic dancers and midgets at hockey games.
Some day I hope to visit Los Vegas. Friends of ours are driving down there during the holidays. And you are right.. I have wondered what it is like to live in Vegas :-).
