Mucopolysaccharidosis

Here’s an inspiring little story from NSAL about a cat suffering from a rare condition called mucopolysaccharidosis.  In most shelters this would be a death sentence, but NSAL has taken on the cat as a special needs project, and are helping him get treatment from specialists at the University of Pennsylvania.  While some might argue it’s not a good way to spend limited funds, it’s also wonderful to see such effort being made to help one special cat.  Treating him may help lead to treatments for other cats in the future, perhaps even cats you and I might encounter.  I never think it’s a bad thing to take a chance, to do something different, and I hope Spanky the cat will be able to live a long and happy life.  If you want to read the full story, click here:  Help Me Heal

  1. Some times you just have to go for it.  I know people who thought I was crazy when I decided to have an etube inserted in poor sick Bear.  I think there were some that thought I was almost being cruel.. that he was suffering.  Well.. you should see him now.. healthy and happy.  Thank goodness I went for it. Now .. I am off to read the post on Sparky.

  2. I can’t remember if I asked this before—what caused Bear to need a feeding tube?  With our Chelsea, it was the stress of coming to live with us after her owner died, and while it was a difficult couple of months, she’s certainly happy now!

  3. Not really sure what caused Bear’s illness.  My Mom was hospitalized for a month and I was stressed and spending most of my days at her bedside.  The vet wondered if Bear reacted to my stress and my absence.  I guess we will never know for sure, but it made me appreciate how sensitive my animals are to my world and my stressors.
