My congeniality award

No, *I* didn’t receive an award for congeniality (no surprise there), but I want to give a couple out.  At SuperZoo, the representatives from Old Mother Hubbard / Wellness, and Front Porch Pets definitely win my praise as two of the nicest and most helpful vendors at the show.  The Old Mother Hubbard rep was fun and friendly, and had lots of great suggestions of ways her company can help us when we adopt out animals.  They want to talk to us about donating gifts for new adoptive parents, for example, and I appreciate how open-minded they were, considering that we’re so “small time”.  I like Wellness brand food if only because it’s a quality product without fillers which is readily available and is reasonably priced, so they’ll continue to have us as customers at least part of the time.

The other company I mentioned, Front Porch Pets, had a fun booth and the reps were easy-going and happy to talk with us.  I don’t know if I’ve written about Front Porch’s products before, but they make “rawhide” out of dried sweet potatoes.  I’ve been buying them for our dogs for the last six months or so, and they’ve been a hit.  At SuperZoo the company introduced new, smaller sizes, including Bichon Fries, which will be perfect for Cricket and Phoenix.  The original veggie rawhide was fairly large, and difficult to cut into small pieces for smaller dogs.  By feeding sweet potato, the dogs still get a “good chew”, but I don’t worry so much about indigestible pieces getting stuck in the digestive tract of dogs who are lazy eaters (I’m lookin’ at you, Eli).

  1. Humm.. I will look to see if I can find the Front Porch rawhides.  Sounds like something Coco would like.

  2. You could try making your own sweet potato rawhides if you have a food dehydrator.  I want to try doing this, but I’m one of the rare people who doesn’t have an old food dehydrator hiding in their closet or basement!

  3. You can do the same thing in your oven by leaving the temperature very low for several hours.
