My poor, wee puppy

Poor, wee (110 lbs.) Dante had surgery this morning, to remove the recurring lump which has grown between his toes.  The lump itches and ruptures, and although it goes away with hydrocortisone cream and prednisone, it always comes back a few weeks later.  We decided it was time to err on the side of caution and have it the thing taken off and sent to a lab so we can find out what it is.  Eventually, I think Dante will feel a lot of relief from this surgery, but tonight he’s having a rough time of it:

He’s got tons of pain meds on board, but he’s still woozy, and a bit uncomfortable.  It’s also tough for us because we’re supposed to keep the wound uncovered but clean, and we’re also supposed to limit Dante’s access to the backyard.  It’s sort of a list of impossibilities.  If he starts bothering the wound tomorrow (he’s got stitches on the top and on the bottom), we’re going to try a cotton sock on it.

Here’s a closeup for those of you who are into such things:

  1. Aw, poor guy. :(

Hope he feels better soon. And watch the kitties.

When our Sheltie, Chelsea, had stitches…Darren the kitty licked her wounds clean every day and nipped out two of her stitches the day the vet was supposed to remove them.  Luckily, the vet said the kitty had done a good clean job of removing the stitches, but that it was a little unorthodox.

  5. Dante is doing pretty well, although he’s a little slower than normal (physically, not mentally).  I’ve had to tell him to leave his foot alone twice, but otherwise he’s been good about not licking it.  I think the healing is well underway, so now we just have to wait for the pathology report and hope that the lump was nothing serious.
