Pet Names (for future reference)
Every once in a while, I’ll hear a name and think, “Wow, that would be such a great name for dog/cat/bird/non-human”. I often forget these brilliant thoughts, though, so I’m going to keep a running list of potential pet names here. I’ll update it as more occur to me. If you have a pet and can’t think of a name, feel free to consult my list.
- Chickpea (similar to Sweet Pea, and from my beloved “Mutts” comic strip)
- Keith
- Gary (thanks to Suburban Bliss Mom for giving me permission to borrow the name of her cat, because it’s such a great name)
- Yummy Bingham
- Morgan, Mason, Matthew, and Modine
Here are my pets’ names (living and deceased):
Cashmere (the cat)
Terlingua (dog)
Montana (dog)
Claudio (cat)
Vino (hamster)
Enrique (parrot)I hear great ones at work everyday, much better than the standards - Lady, Max, Bear, etc.
Posted by vetmommy on 10/12 at 04:26 PMGrowing up I had Dusty (a parakeet), and later in life I had Dustin (a poodle). It was not until this instant that I realized their names were practically identical.
I’ve also had birds named Teddy & Nelly (the Roosevelts), Wheezy, Ollie, Kermit, Milquetoast, Scooter, Ethel, and Bubbe. My dogs have been named Wiggles, Cleo, and Herman, and I had cats named Lucifer, Hobbes, and Sweet Pea (as well as our foster children, Stewie and Andre). The fish are always named Bob and Priscilla.
Currently we of course have our dogs, Eli, Dante, Phoenix, and Cricket; the cats, Chelsea, Jackson Monroe, Derek, and Frank; and the birds, Pepe, Chile, Julius, Blackjack, Keno, and Petey. I wanted to name my childhood parakeet “Petey”, but my parents forbade it because my grandmother always named her parakeets “Petey”, and my folks thought the name was unoriginal. I showed them by ending up with a Petey anyway, so there :p
Sometimes we’ll come up a great name, but it just doesn’t seem to “fit”. When we found Frank we named him Sputnik, but it didn’t seem endearing enough. We wanted to name him “Tie Domi”, but that seemed too fan girl of us. We considered Tugger and still, it didn’t feel right. So now he’s Frank. It suits him.
