Rory’s last day in Las Vegas

The last day Rory spent with us, I went a little bit camera-happy and took a lot of photos to remember her by.  Here are a few of my favourites:

Sharing a bite of a McGriddle with Flippy.  We rarely ever get up at an hour when McDonald’s is still serving breakfast, so things like Egg McMuffins are generally once-a-year treats.

Never drink then play on the Boogie Mat, kids!  That’s the lesson you can learn from this.

I think this is silent cat language for, “Put the camera down and back away slowly”.

Rory waves goodbye from inside her cool little Sherpa bag.

It ended up that US Air really didn’t require any paperwork for the cat to travel in the cabin.  I called the vet’s office and they said they’d encountered that situation before as well, but just in case, they printed out all of Rory’s vet records for us, including a statement saying she was too young for vaccinations.  She apparently made it home fine, and she has a good little bladder—her trip was probably close to 10 hours long.

As my brother commented in the last entry, Rory’s name was changed to “Vegas”, and she’s been introduced to the other cats in her new household.  I don’t have any news other than that, as my brother isn’t a great communicator about such things (that was a jab I hope he’ll read, and will then send me daily kitten updates to assuage his guilt).  If I don’t hear from him tomorrow I’ll try to phone him, but the time zone difference means I always think to call him when it’s too late in the evening.

While Rory was with us (I’ll just call her Rory for now, as I often use the word “Vegas” to refer to where we live and don’t want to confuse the entry), she was very forward with our other cats, and would just bounce up to them to play and wrestle.  If they hissed at her, she merrily skipped away like nothing was wrong.  By the time she left us, she was getting along well with our male kittens, Tie and Scampi, but our female kitten, Bing, didn’t like Rory at all.  Bing went out of her way to hiss and generally act offended by Rory’s presence.  I didn’t think the situation was all that bad until Rory left, and suddenly Bing became the most affectionate kitten in the house.  She’s always been quite independent and not really cuddly, but a few hours after Rory was gone, Bing climbed into bed with me and slept in my armpit.  She’s never done that before.  The next day she followed us all over the house, and had to sit on our laps while we watched TV.  All the kittens, in fact, seem extra-affectionate.  Apparently the presence of a kitten really wore them out, as they’re all exceptionally happy now.  I think it’s a bit rude of them to dislike homeless “interlopers”, but I guess little kids can be pretty exasperating.

On an unrelated note, I had my final immigration medical exam today.  It was the briefest of the brief—apparently if you don’t have syphilis or AIDS, a cursory exam is all that’s needed.  I didn’t mind, but as I tried to explain to Flippy, I was so worried and anxious before I went in, and the 30-second exam (literally), didn’t give me time to work off my anxiety.  I still came out of there a bit wired, as I hadn’t had time to let it out.  I was especially worried because part of the exam is supposed to be a check of a person’s “mental status”, and I knew that if I had to change into a gown, the doctor would be able to see these huge (8” long) scratches on my legs.  Scampi tried to jump on my lap yesterday, missed, and then dug his claws in my thigh as he slipped off, leaving bloody track marks.  I figured that with my luck, I’d have a doctor accuse me of cutting myself or something, thus delaying my case.  I actually had that happen a couple of decades ago when I went to Urgent Care for a sore throat, and ended up being grilled about the toucan scratches on my arms, so I think it was a valid concern.  Thank goodness I didn’t have little kitten nail marks between my toes!

  4. What a sweet looking cat!  I’m sorry you had to say goodbye, but it’s wonderful she’s got a permanent home.  And woke up the other cats <g>.

We keep wondering whether Ziggy would commit suicide or homicide were we to introduce a kitten into the household, and haven’t take the plunge.  She’s in a bout with IBS right now, so certainly we wouldn’t consider such a thing until she feels better, but I really do wonder if it wouldn’t help her to have a kitten around.  I think Jenny (golden retriever) would like it alot!

And re: medical exam being done - horray!  What a long obnoxious process.  Glad the doc wasn’t overly observent!

  5. The kitten really was a sweetie, Print… it’s taken me all week to stop feeling sad about her not being here.  She managed to be a big presence in the house in a very short time.

As for older cats and kittens, I think they can co-exist quite well as long as they’re introduced properly.  There seems to be a degree of forgiveness on the part of adult cats towards kitten behaviour, but the kittens can be so forward and pushy they can freak out older cats who aren’t used to them.

If you got a kitten, I’d definitely suggest you plan ahead and arrange a room for the kitten to live in for a while, away from Ziggy.  A bathroom with a babygate on the door would work okay.  Feed the kitten in the bathroom, and have a litterbox in there for her.  Ziggy and Jenny can then get to know the kitten at their own pace, by sniffing through the door, and that way they’ll gradually be introduced.  Cats seem to integrate quite well as long as you do it gradually.  Our kittens seem to have really brought out the youngster in our older cats, and they’re all a lot more playful now.

  6. awww… I’ve been so behind on my blog reading and writing that I only just saw all the cute kitty pics. HOW ADORABLE! Lucky Rory/Vegas picked the right place to hide out and now she has a great new home.
