Royal Canin prescription cat food recalled, plus more Nutro recalls
Royal Canin in Canada is recalling “Medi-Cal Feline Dissolution Formula canned diet” because one product lot contains contaminated wheat gluten. The product is sold only through vet clinics, and I believe this problem only affected product distributed in Canada. The recalled cans of food have the best-before date of Jan. 8, 2009.
Also, Nutro is pulling all of their dog and cat food which contains wheat gluten, regardless of when the product was manufactured. That includes all of their pouch products, as well as selected canned dog and cat food. You can find the list on Nutro’s website.
And… some more products have been added to the list of recalls from Menu Foods. Rather than explaining it myself, you should read the press release.
I guess we shouldn’t feel secure about what we’re feeding just yet, especially if it contains wheat gluten. This contaminated wheat gluten is proving to be awfully difficult to track down.
I JUST got a call from my good friend who is livid as she has been feeding her cat the recalled medi-cal stuff. She is especially pissed as her vet told her to stop feeding her cat RAW food and now she feels like she has been possibly poisoning her cat upon vet orders. Brutal.
I was at the pet store today and was looking at the Natural Balance dry food now that I have read on your blog that Wellness is made at the Menu Foods plant.
I wish Yoshi liked RAW food but she just doesn’t.
DAMMIT this is all so frustrating.
Thanks for the updates.
Posted by Von Krankipantzen on 04/10 at 08:03 PMWow, that’s a terrible story. There’ve been so many cases where owners have inadvertently poisoned their own pets. I hope your friend’s cat will pull through.
There must be raw diets aimed at cats with kidney failure, but it would be tough because the diet would need to be low in protein. If your friend has any trouble finding online resources, please let me know and I’ll see what I can dig up.
Posted by Leigh-Ann on 04/10 at 08:56 PMThis is probably a silly question, and I’m not sure if you’ll know the answer, but I’m getting more and more paranoid. If wheat gluten is in a pet food, is that the name under which it would be listed? I wasn’t sure if there are other names for the same stuff that I need to be aware of.
I’ve got my little furball purring and making “biscuits” in my lap right now, looking up at me like I’m the best thing since wet food, and I have no words for how I would feel if something happened to him.
Posted by Helena on 04/11 at 06:28 AMUsually it will say “wheat gluten” on the label if it’s in there.
I feed our cats Nutro for breakfast. I had to take the rest of it back. I know we had a few October dates in that batch and the cats may have had a few packets of it. But so far, everyone seems fine. I’ve bought a lot of the Flaky Tuna (without egg or cheese) because that seems to be grain-free. I’d like to make their breakfast, but the sweetie is against the idea. Lots and lots of frustration here too. The pet store wanted to encourage me to try a new type of food by Wellness that is supposed to be grain-free, but it’s processed by Menu Foods too, and I’m just effing paranoid at this point. I’ll continue to buy the Innova Evo dry from that store, because it’s a great store. But I don’t want to buy wet food any more.

The media got this one wrong. The Royal Canin food wasn’t recalled.
later…
Posted by It's me, T.J. on 04/14 at 07:49 PMAccording to the Royal Canin website, the recall is still valid: http://www.medi-cal.ca/
It was only for one type of prescription food in Canada, so I don’t even know if it was mentioned by the US media. The recall isn’t mentioned on Royal Canin’s American website, only on the Canadian one.
