SuperZoo photos
I’m a little slow (as usual), but here are some of the photos from the SuperZoo convention:
The first is a photo of a macaw that was on display at the Feathered Phonics booth (yes, I did buy a couple of instructional CDs for Blackjack, although I’m not sure I’m excited about hearing her make elephant sounds all day). It was an absolutely gorgeous bird, and my photo doesn’t do it justice because I didn’t want to use the flash in case I startled it. It was a deep green, accented with a powerful blue, and I’d never seen anything like it. I asked the woman at the booth what kind of macaw it was, and she said it was a cross between a Military macaw and a Hyacinth macaw. I asked if the cross was intentional or accidental and she said it was intentional, although she said it with a look on her face which indicated that she didn’t entirely know if that was a good idea. I’m torn about it—on the one hand, I’d hate to see either Military macaws or the much more rare Hyacinths end up being “diluted” by having their gene pools all mixed up. On the other hand, this was an absolutely gorgeous bird. Perhaps not as striking as a Hyacinth, but so much more “classy” looking than a Military. I’ll hope that mixing species this way doesn’t become a regular thing, but I’ll still appreciate the mixtures which exist. I didn’t know what to call the bird, so I figured it would be a “Hyatary macaw” (although I did a web search and found them referred to as both “Milahy” and “Milicinth”; there’s obviously no consensus):

I don’t even know what company was running this next display, which is probably a sign of poor advertising. Still, they grabbed Flippy’s attention with their hedgehogs, and my attention with two incredible tanks of jellyfish. They were small jellyfish, each about the size of a tennis ball, but really, really cool. Again, I didn’t use a flash, so excuse the odd colour quality and the small blur:

I didn’t take this photo myself, but did scan it from a brochure I picked up. It’s the infamous “chicken coop” that I want for my future chickens. Isn’t it adorable?

I’m cheating a bit, because this isn’t a photo from the trade show. However, it’s a photo of a pet product that I’m really impressed with, and which Chelsea is obviously enjoying:

The tree is manufactured by Armarkat, and they have fabulous prices. If you check out their website you’ll see the tree in the photo for $189, which includes shipping to anywhere in the US. That’s a great price, especially when you consider a tree like this would cost over $300 at Petsmart (and you’d have to go out and buy it and carry it home with you). However, you can get an even better deal if you keep an eye on the Armarkat cat furniture on eBay listings. I bought the identical tree for just $49.99, plus shipping. Yes, shipping is pricey (often more than the price of the tree itself), but if you keep an eye on the auctions you should be able to save at least another $50 off the website prices. The trees come unassembled, but you can put them together easily in less than half an hour (the only tool you need is an allen wrench, which is included). I bought three different trees of different sizes, and the cats just love them. It helps keep peace in the household and cats off the sofa (in theory). It also gives me a place to put the cat food dishes so the dogs don’t get into them. Please note that the stack of cat toys piled on the tree are not included with your purchase—I just needed to put them someplace while I vacuumed.
Would you please send me a copy of the chicken coop brochure? We are actually ready to get started in the preparations for getting some chickens. That coop and caged yard look perfect for our needs. Thanks.
