The Curious Incident of the Cat Poop in the Night-Time

Derek had his anal glands cleaned on Monday because his butt is always dirty.  It’s probably somewhat dirty because he’s so fat he can’t reach it to clean it, but it’s also extra dirty most of the time.  We’ve bought baby wipes just for him, that’s how dirty his butt can be.  So, his anal glands were “expressed” on Monday, and I thought nothing of it until last night when his butt seemed awfully dirty again.  I cleaned it, went to bed, and at some point in the evening I woke up and he was sitting on my arm in the dark.  “Hee, hee”, I thought to myself, “It’s okay if he sits on my arm because his butt is squeaky clean”, and I fell asleep again.  When I finally did wake up, there was a smear of cat poop on my arm.  Cat poop!  On my arm!  Oh my god!  It didn’t seem to be anywhere else (luckily I don’t move around much when I sleep), so I disinfected my arm and tossed my pillowcase in the wash and then I scrubbed the cat’s butt.  I’ve had to scrub it about three times since then because now he seems to be… leaking.  And just a few minutes ago he had diarrhea.  It’s not fair!  I already struggled this morning to get his Clavamox and Flagyl into him for his bladder infection, and now I’ve got to wonder what’s causing him to have the runs and the drips.  Bah, cats, bah.

I haven’t been feeling very well myself, but I’ll spare the gruesome details.

Btw, I’ve decided that if there’s a Hell, it consists of endlessly having to give pills to cats.

  1. It is the flagyl that is giving him the diarrhea, don’t think it has anything to do with expressing the anal glads yesterday.  We have a cat who is also too fat to clean his butt and use baby wipes on him also.  But the good things is that he isn’t licking it with the same tongue he licks our fingers with!

  2. I gave the vet a call and they think that it’s the Clavamox that’s giving him the runs, and they want me to continue the Flagyl as that’s what they recommend to treat diarrhea.  My head is spinning.  Today the poor little guy is feeling pretty lousy so I’m letting him go “pill free”, and then I’ll start the meds up again one at a time to see if I can figure out the culprit.  We’re also getting Keflex to replace the Clavamox in case that’s the cause, but they couldn’t offer anything else for diarrhea.  Nancy thinks we should just employ a big cork for his butt.
