The yin and yang of two-day old kittens

day_two (9)

We have two new foster kittens today:

day_two (10)

They’ve both got little pink noses and little pink toes (Flippy calls those kind of toes, “bubblegum toes").  They were abandoned by their mother (a stray cat) in a warehouse, and I’ve got no doubt that they’ll have a better life than their siblings.  So far they’re eating well and are very quiet, and the only slightly troublesome thing about them is that they’ve got a bit of diarrhea.  They went on their first shopping trip today, to Petco, so I could buy a tin of powdered formula after picking them up from the vet’s office.  I think the grey and white one is a boy, and the white one is a girl, but it’s hard to be positive about these things until they get a bit older.

So, who wants to adopt them?

  1. Oh, I wish I could take one.

I am so partial to DSH cats that have grey in the coat! But my current house (it is a tiny cabin) is too small and cluttered for the indoor cat furniture I’d want to get (scratch posts, litter box, etc). :( While I could use a good cat out in the barn, it’s out of the question for our current locale because we live too close to a busy road.

At least my chickens don’t cross the road! The chickens seem to take care of any mouse problem out there and my Anatolians take out the occasional rat, possum, and other varmint that comes by. But I sure miss having a kitty. There’s nothing like a happy cat kneading your lap and purring…

  2. Oh, so precious.

They are just adorable. Every time you have adorable kittens I always think about taking one - but my current cat just doesn’t accept new felines in the house, he only allows dogs. Go figure.

  3. Oh my.
One of the strays I’m feeding is a grey and white tom. I just borrowed a humane trap to nab him (and whoever else I can grab) since I found a vet who will do $40 speuters on strays…

  4. Prajantr, you obviously know what’s best in your household, but I have to ask if you’ve tried having young kittens around for any length of time?  My cats hiss and get all upset about kittens, but adjust after just a couple of days.  Our cat Bing acts as if the sky is falling when a new kitten is brought upstairs, and a couple of weeks later she’s playing and napping with it.  Even Madison’s new family thought that their grumpy old female would have a tough time, but it only took a week for the two cats to become friends.  It seems like many cranky cats make exceptions for kittens.

Of course, there are many which don’t (I think Carina has a cat like that?).  I’m sure some cats would want to kill new kittens, and others would become severely depressed, but I think those might be in the minority.  I’m lucky that all my cats can tolerate new critters, even if they aren’t always happy at first.

    -------------
Carina, if I could find $40 speuters, I’d be trapping cats every week.  That’s wonderfully affordable.  My vet is quite good with us, but when I asked if she’d do speuters on a regular basis for me, I was only offered a 10% discount.  That means I’ll pay $225 instead of $250.

  5. Holy moley!  Cuuuuuuutttteeeee!  I cannot wait to see the photos of these little beasties getting bigger and bigger.  That is pretty expensive fixin’ fees.  The SPCA charges $65 or there abouts here.  Wow! That is a lot to take on as a fosterer/rescuer.  You guys rock.

  6. Semavi Lady, I figured you’d have a larger home because your dogs are so huge.  Do they stay outside, or in the barn?

When you’re ready, I’ll happily send you some of my “raised with love and lots of lost sleep” kittens, but they can’t be barn cats - they need king sized beds, feather duvets, and HDTV.  Oh, and TiVo.

  7. Leigh-Ann, our dogs are outside dogs. They have house privileges at times but it is much too tiny and cluttered in here for 24/7. My kitchen is little bigger than a walk-in closet. When we first moved here, my teenaged cats lived inside the house, they have passed on. We adopted an older GSD from AC as well. We had moved from a typical suburban house that was three times larger about 20 years ago. (Some things that don’t fit in the house are in boxes still!)

Our block is a zoning left over from older times. It consists of some (nearly ramshackle) older homes zoned with 1 to 5 acres lots and okay for livestock. I needed an affordable fixer-upper with room for the horses I had. It is generally a nice place. Sometimes other people’s horses get loose and roam around the block and would visit with mine. One neighbor has had rheas, sheep, goats, llamas and assorted other critters from time to time. Just beyond our block are newer and bigger houses on less than 1/4 acre since one owner with a couple 5 acre plots rezoned them for suburban sprawl. Our block is surrounded by busy roads. :(
I had been given some homeless cats from another horse friend. We neutered them, put them to work in the barn but before two years were up, the cats had met unfortunate ends. One can hardly make cat proof fencing to keep them on the property… I gave up. Our GSD eventually passed on too, but not before he had nearly eviscerated one horse. That’s how we determined we needed dogs that were gentle with livestock and discovered the LGD genre.

Interesting area. There are awesome custom houses around the corner which cost over a million, w brick accented fronts, old trees, some w stained glass accents in the windows, 2 stories… One was featured in print years ago in a pictorial. It had an indoor waterfall<!!>. (swoon!)
