Why I can’t blog more often, and about WaMu stealing my money

I don’t know if I ever explained the little problem with my blog which cropped up a few months ago:  I can’t login to post from my desktop computer, and can only use my laptop.  I have absolutely no idea why/how this problem started, but it’s a real pain in the butt.  I don’t use my laptop often—the power cord is damaged and the battery only holds a charge for 90 minutes—so I can’t be “spontaneous” about writing.  I’ve tried deleting my cookies and making sure my IP address isn’t in my blacklist, but I’m still just getting a “page not found” error when I try to login via my desktop computer.  That’s where I spend most of my day, so that’s why I rarely write blog entries anymore.  I actually can’t log into my Tired Girls blog via my desktop PC, either, so I guess the universe is telling me to be quiet.  If I ever figure this out and get it fixed, well, I’ve got lots to write about.

Here’s an example of what I’d blog about:  Washington Mutual bank is run by thieves.  I deposited a check, and a few days later, paid two bills of $125 each from that account.  A few more days pass and I get a notice saying that both payments “bounced”, so I’d been charged $68 in NSF fees.  The bank tells me that despite the fact I had a positive ledger balance and enough money in the account to pay the bills, technically, I hadn’t waited five full business days for the check I’d deposited to clear.  I’d only waited four business days, so the funds weren’t really available to be used, which is why the charges were rejected.  Did WaMu return the fees to me after the fifth business day, when it was obvious I’d deposited a “good” check?  Nope.  Instead, I was left unable to pay both of the $125 bills I owed, because I’d lost almost $70.  A week later, I get an overdraft notice, and log in to find my bank account is overdrawn by over $300.  It seems that those rejected charges of $125 were automatically put through my account again, and while they were paid this time, I was again charged $68 in overdraft fees.  My bank account has cost me almost $140 in the past ten days, for no good reason.  It’s extremely difficult to be poor and to not want to wring the neck of every other business you encounter… there’s no common sense, but mostly, no sympathy.  At the very least, I get the satisfaction of blogging to write about WaMu and how much they suck… I hope you’ve enjoyed this as much as I have.

I don’t know if you’ll recall the cats Greg and Spiderman, who I adopted out a little over a year ago (Greg was a huge, grey, majestic lion, and Spiderman was a googly-eyed blind dude who enjoyed singing).  I got an adoption update from their owner, and they’re apparently settled in well and both content.  Spiderman has a heart murmur, so he has a veterinary ophthalmologist AND a cardiologist—thank goodness they were adopted by a new Mom with money.  I was surprised to hear that it took Greg many months to settle down and feel comfortable with the new owner, although it explains his attachment to me, and how he tried to follow us out of the new adopter’s house after we’d dropped him off.  He saw Flippy and I walking out the front door and he got this look of terror in his eyes and tried to run after us… it made me very sad to leave him, but I figured he’d settle in quite easily.  I guess the settling wasn’t as easy as I’d hoped, but it’s finally happened.  They were both really, really sweet cats.

There isn’t much rescue/foster cat news, other than the Greg and Spidey update.  I’m feeding one stray right now (as usual, it seems to live in the yard of the house next door), but the previous two strays have vanished.  Feral cats live in colonies, but it seems that abandoned house cats are more prone to a solitary life.  I might feed one stray for six months, and then suddenly it will vanish and be replaced by a brand new one.  I never get two cats at the same time (or on the rare occasion I have, they’ve been brawling in the front yard).  It’s always a question of whether or not to try to trap the cat to look for a microchip, but with our financial state and the economy, for now it will remain outside.  It’s just not a good time for us to bring in another animal, at least, not until one of us finds a job and we get our mortgage secured.

  1. It amazes me that they’ll charge you overdraft fees for checks you wrote, but they don’t charge me for the mortgage payment they auto-deduct out of my account each month.  Our Galena house martage is with Wamu, but all my other accounts are with Chase.  Each month I deposit the check from my Chase account to my Wamu account…..generally on the last day of the month.  And, every month they do the autu-deduct on the first of the month.  There is no 5 day wait period for them to ensure the check has cleared and I’ve never been charged an overdraft fee.  Seems fishy to me.
