Dogs deserve better

Thanks to Susan at Wildrun for making me aware of this story: Dogs Deserve Better.  It’s essentially the story of a woman who took someone else’s dying and neglected dog off a chain and sought emergency veterinary care for it, and who’s subsequently been charged with theft for refusing to return the dog to its neglectful owners.  I realize there are some complicated issues involved when it comes to pets and ownership, but the ample video evidence in this case proves that the dog was indeed on death’s door and had been for some time, and that local authorities (police and humane), refused to come to the dog’s aid.  This is definitely a situation where someone needed to stand up for the dog’s rights, and it seems the only person willing to do that was Tammy Grimes.  I find it unthinkable that even with veterinary documentation of the dog’s neglect, police still refuse to charge the dog’s owners with cruelty.

  1. I hope there’s a lawyer out there who will depend her for free.  I also hope that with enough public outcry, they can pass some sort of good Samaritan laws to protect people.

  5. Sorry, Eric… when Blogrolling doesn’t update properly (which it rarely does), I end up missing many blog entries!  I’m working on adding a new link module which is exclusive to Expression Engine, and it’s supposed to resolve a lot of the problems that Blogrolling can’t.  Or, I guess I could use a feed reader, but I’m such an old fashioned girl…

  6. Oh Leigh-Ann - that is just horrible. Thank you to you & Eric also for writing about this case. I’m going to go through the info later when I have time and do what little I can.
I have on two occasions “stolen” dogs. Don’t feel bad about it ONE BIT (didn’t get caught either, thankfully.) I may write about this later too. I was on a very active Rottweiler forum at one point & wrote about it there. I was truly astonished that so many committed dog people berated me for stealing dogs - mostly the arguments were the “slippery slope” variety where this sort of thing could lead to loss of rights for pet owners blah blah blah. Not one iota of which changed my mind, even if I did give it credence. Bottom line, what Tammy Grimes did was the right thing to do; one cannot stand back, let another being suffer and die and not do anything, when the situation can be remedied.
I believe Elie Weisel (sp) had something to say about that too….
