Tales from the holidays
Well, it’s over for another year… no more Christmas, or prepping for Christmas, or staying up until 6am on the morning of the 24th trying to frantically get an electronic gift to work so we could wrap it. No more paying hundreds of dollars to the post office, who didn’t get packages to arrive on time, anyway. I’m slightly bitter at the post office, who lost one express overnight package completely (never to be seen again), and misplaced another for a week and still haven’t delivered it. On a happy note, Flippy and I had a very nice Christmas eve with her family, and then a totally relaxing Christmas day and Boxing day. On Christmas day I was going to cook a small turkey, but I was so exhausted (I hadn’t gotten to bed until 8am that day), that we went to a casino buffet instead. It wasn’t too crowded, and it was fun to just eat a variety of food (and to drink free mimosas). I did cook the turkey today, finally, but we have tons of leftovers and it will become pot pie and soup and sandwiches over the next few days.
We opened gifts at Flippy’s family’s house on Christmas eve, then opened the gifts from my family late on Christmas day (about 10pm or so). I bought a ton of the “Christmas Classics” on DVD, so we saw “A Charlie Brown Christmas” on the 25th, and “Emmet Otter” this evening (we’re holding off on “Rudolph’s Shiny New Year” until next weekend). We received just the right number of gifts - enough that there are fun and exciting new things to enjoy but not so much that I have to worry about where to put stuff away! We got clothes and books and DVDs and hockey stuff, and the cats had a wonderful time helping us open everything. Unfortunately, almost all the cats are under the weather with URIs (Bing is very bad today, but still eating), so it was sad to hear them sniffling and to see their runny, gooey eyes.
The main gifts we gave out this year were digital photo frames. I gave one to my parents and each of my siblings, and Nancy gave one to her parents. We spent a lot of time scanning old photos to put on the frames, so it was a gift that was high-tech yet very personal. Ironically, one of the gifts my Mother sent me was a small photo album full of old pictures of me, pictures I don’t ever recall seeing, and many of them were photos taken on Christmas day’s past. They were lots of fun to look at ![]()
Please leave a comment about the gifts you received or the food you ate or both—food and gifts are both excellent things to discuss!
Glad your Christmas was so nice! Once everyone got well, ours was quite lovely, too. I made a prime rib roast with Yorkshire pudding (always wanted to try it and Christmas is a good time to experiment, I feel), homemade rolls, roasted parsnips, a nice salad with gorgonzola, walnuts, pears and red romaine. Stocking candy and the kids’ cut-out cookies for dessert. I put scads of chocolate and cookies in the freezer, so they won’t go stale and can be doled out in July or September or whenever. I got 2 lovely “big” gifts: a very good camera and a professional set of pots and pans. I was also blessed with tons of wonderful things from a very cool vase to a massive collection of teas (let’s not forget the Chocolates of the World collection) and 2 pairs of stunning, very-cool earrings. Best of all? We’ve got the entire week together to just be with each other.
Merry Christmas to you and Flippy!
Posted by Diana on 12/27 at 07:05 AMMy food story is the same as yours. I was way too tired to cook on Christmas Day, so we just ate snackish food. Yesterday I baked a big chicken. A huge chicken - it took forever. Now we have lots of leftovers, but I think it will all just get picked off the bone without me having to make soup or pot pie.
I LOVE the classic Christmas tv shows, like Rudolph and Frosty (especially Frosty) and Santa Claus is coming to town. We got those for Anthony last year and have watched them about a billion times since then. Charlie Brown is a favorite too, but I haven’t seen it since I was a kid.
Those digital photo frames sound really cool. Can you post a link?
I’m glad you had a good Christmas.
Posted by Nancy on 12/27 at 09:19 AMSounds like a good time, except for the cats. Victor had sneezies for a few months and would dive under the covers with me, then let off a HUGE wet one with lots of splatter. Can you feel the love?
Anyway, we had ham Saturday nite, turkey Sunday, split pea soup Monday, and turkey pot pie last night. We weren’t traveling, visiting, or having guests, so we enjoyed relaxing. I have the same feeling as you about the gifts; enough to feel good, not too many to put away (except the boy; his room is unbelievable). Victor & Bonnie were spoiled with Purr Pads, Trader Joe Tuna for Cats (B&V give it two paws up), 2 stockings of toys and their Secret Paws gifts. Naturally, they played in the wrapping paper.
On the down side, we’re still wrapping gifts to ship! Hubby put off his shopping until this past weekend, so even stuff I had early is now late.
I hope the kitties are ALL better soon.
Posted by Victor Tabbycat's Mom on 12/27 at 12:20 PMSounds wonderful except for the poor sniffling kittens....!
I had roast leg of lamb, roasted root vegetables, onions with fresh rosemary in cream sauce, home made cheesy bread, broccoli, salad and two kinds of home made cheesecake for Christmas dinner at my friend Robbie’s house and she is an AWESOME cook! Always puts on a great spread.
And lots of nice little gifties (you saw one of my faves on my blog)...I was sort of flush this Christmas and had more fun shopping for and gifting friends & family. Oh, I have one gift to come, a friend is getting me a print framed but the frame shop was behind.
Now I have to go Google “digital photo frames” because I am so un-techie I haven’t a clue what you’re talking about.Posted by Carina on 12/27 at 06:35 PMI wrote an entry about the digital photo frames we bought:
