Xylitol can be toxic

There was an interesting little snippet in the latest ASPCA newsletter about how the artificial sweetener xylitol can be poisonous to pets.  It’s not a sweetener I’m too familiar with (I think I’ve only noticed it in chewing gum), but figure it’s good to put the word out there.  I’ll admit I like my artificial sweeteners, because they let me enjoy things like Crystal Light without any guilt, but if this stuff is harmful to pets, I guess it’s probably not good for people over the long haul, either.

  1. Last week I was stunned to find out that onions (raw, cooked, dried, powdered) are toxic to dogs. That may seem stupid to you experts, but I had NO idea. I’d never read or heard this, the way I’d had “no chocolate for doggies!” drilled into me since, like, birth. Sprocket ate stuff with onions all the time.  I never feed leftovers, like scraping dishes into his bowl, but he has always had morsels and tastes of whatever I have, even more on Steak Night. I was horrified at what I might have done to him.  He appears none the worse for wear, though a little impatient at his mommy grabbing him and crying all the time.

  2. The one that surprised me the most was grapes/raisins.  Who would ever think a little ol’ grape could be so sinister?  I guess it all comes down to quantity… probably a few onions are fine, like a few grapes are fine, but when it doubt, err on the side of caution.  And don’t asphyxiate the dog smile

  3. The grapes surprised us too, because Alan remembers this time when he was a kid that their poodle got into the fruit bowl and ate a h-u-g-e pile of grapes, then ran around berserk on a doggy sugar high (but was otherwise fine). I don’t think I’ve ever fed Sprocket a grape, though, unlike stuff with onions. And I never have raisins so no danger there. Raisins upset me: just elderly, depressed grapes.
